Mini Memoir
I will never forget that feeling, it sent a rush through my body that I had never felt before. I was an assistant on my sister’s 10U softball team. I was never a big part of the coaching staff for the team. I didn’t like that at all. I always heard the girls say, “Coach Scott”, “Coach Taryn”, and “Coach Awrey.” My uncle, dad, and cousin were all coaches and I’d always wanted to be one. I helped the team with every practice and I was in the dugout for all the games. I wondered why I wasn’t considered a coach. Until last year.
Last year the girls started pitching. Therefore, my uncle Scott, the head coach, gave me a job. I was too warm up the pitchers for games. I loved the feeling that it gave me to feel needed. I love nothing more than to be an important part of a team and I was always just, a part of the team. Throughout the season Scott said that I am a great person to have on the coaching staff because I make it a lot easier on him and the other coaches. Having my uncle say that to me helped me realize that I do more for the team than what I gave myself credit for. After that, I really did feel like I was helping the team more than ever. I gained knowledge on every girl’s pitching ability and I could report how they did warming up to Scott. I learned how fast, slow, high, or low each girl’s pitches were. I had a great time helping the girls too. This job gave me something that everyone looked to me for on the team. It was my responsibility to help the girls warm up and other coaches look to me for the job. I officially felt like a coach, I had a job to do. I couldn’t be happier, at least that’s what I thought at that point.
One day we had an away game in Charlotte. We got there and started to warm up the girls for batting. I shagged the hit balls. In about the fourth inning of that game we were winning and we needed a new pitcher to go in the game soon. Scott said to Aubrey, a player, “Go ask Coach Hunter if he can warm you up for pitching, you’re going in.” When I heard Scott say that I couldn’t believe it. The head coach just called me a coach! I saw her come over to me with the biggest smile on her face. She had never pitched a game before. I will never forget the way she looked at me and said, “Coach Hunter, can you warm me up for pitching?” I couldn’t believe what had just happened. I was called coach by another coach and a player! So, I responded, “Grab a ball!” She smiled even bigger and we went to warm her up behind the dugout. She later pitched two innings in the game and did great. I got to be her hero that day just by doing my job. That moment gave me a lesson for the rest of my life. That moment gave me a feeling I had never felt before. It showed me that if something feels right it’s probably right where I need to be. And it felt right. I could’ve quit coaching years before but now I know that feeling, I will never quit doing what I love. I will never forget that feeling, it sent a rush through my body that I had never felt before.
